Pekepoo Hybrid Dogs (Peekapoo, Peke-A-Poo, Pekapoo)

A cross between a Pekingese and a Miniature Poodle, the Pekepoo, alternatively spelled Peekapoo, Peke-A-Poo or Pekapoo, is a very popular canine hybrid.  There are some breeders that now use a Pekepoo crossed back to a Toy Poodle, resulting in an even smaller hybrid dog. The Peke-A-Poo is a very diverse looking hybrid with some almost completely Poodle like in appearance and coat and others more like the Pekingese.

In general the breed is a small sized dog, not usually weighing more than 20 pounds and many as light as 8 to 9 pounds when fully mature. They have the very alert, round, intelligent eyes of both parent breeds combined with the shorter muzzle and small to medium length ears that are either pricked or turned over. Some Peekapoos may have the undershot lower jaw of the Pekingese but this is not always present.

These dogs are strong and sturdy and they tend to be moderately active both inside and outside the house. The coat may be low shedding and slightly curly to wavy. As with most hybrid breeds there is a lot of variation in coat colors from solid tans and golden colors through to blacks, chocolates and grays. Tri-colors and white and black, brown or red are also common. The tail is carried high over the back and well plumed, very close in appearance to the Pekingese tail.

The Pekapoo is one of the hybrid breeds that is known for their love and loyalty towards their family. They can be somewhat wary and rather aggressive towards strangers and visitors if not properly and routinely socialized. They will usually take awhile to become comfortable around new people but then willingly accept them into the family. While they will bark to sound an alarm when someone new approaches they are not good guard dogs due to their small size.

Pekepoos get along well with other dogs, cats and children when raised together. Most are very easy to socialize and enjoy playing and romping with other dogs. Some Pekapoos may have the tendency to be dominant and a bit demanding so obedience training is highly recommended as early as possible. They are a true companion dog and need to be close to their human family, not left outdoors or in a kennel.

Generally the Pekepoo is a low shedding dog that requires grooming every two to three days to keep the coat free from tangles and mats. Some may need additional grooming in the spring to prevent heavier shedding, especially those that have the more Pekingese type coat. Many owners choose to clip their Peke-A-Poos in the sport or puppy clip for easy year round care.

Eye problems are found in both parent breeds so careful selection of the breeding pair is highly recommended. Any tearing of the eyes should be closely monitored and eyes should be routinely checked at the annual vet visit. The Pekepoo may be sensitive to cold and damp weather and should be kept indoors in very cold or wet weather.
