Colored Contact Lenses For Dark Eyes

Updated on January 27, 2012

What Are The Best Colored Contact Lenses For Dark Eyes?

You want to change up your look a bit. You want a fresh feature to your face. What better way is there to accomplish this than to use colored contact lenses! Beware, they are not right for everyone, or are they?

Colored contact lenses are one of the latest and best ways to get a new look without a lot of work. They are affordable and they are readily available. This unique way to dress up your eyes allows you to change them to virtually any color.

Traditionally, those that wanted to use colored contacts that did have a dark color would have to use products that could only slightly change their color. Today, there are several options available to those looking for that new tint in the mirror.

Two Styles To Consider

In order to use contact lenses to change the color of the eye, a thin contact lens is placed over the iris, or the colored part of your eye.  This would mask the old color and allow the new color to come through.  The two different ways to make this happen are opaque colored contacts and enhancing tinted contacts.  The option that you select will depend on what you are looking for in terms of color as well as what color your eyes are currently.

Opaque colored contacts are designed to fit over the iris and completely mask the color that is below.  These contacts are colored entirely except for the very center of the contact, which remains clear.  When fitted over the top of the eye, the pupil remains clear so that you can see through it clearly and the iris is transformed into the new color.  This particular type of contact lens is the best choice for those that have dark colored eyes because the eye's color is completely masked.

The other type; enhancing tinted contact lenses, are a great option for those that want to tweak the color of their eyes somewhat.  For example, if you would like to go from a soft green color to a darker green, these enhancing tinted lenses could be very successful at doing this for you.  Yet, they do not work well for the person that is looking for a drastic change and have dark eye color.

Even the most defining of the enhancing tinted contact lenses are unable to change the color of deep brown or black colored eyes.  Even dark blues can be challenging.

One thing to note, though, is that when you do choose contact lenses for your colored eyes; realize that brand names will be completely unique.  You will find that even the same color will be completely unique from one brand to the next.  In addition, if you place the contacts in your eyes, the eyes will take on a completely unique look that is all your own.  The same contacts in someone else's eyes will look different than yours.  Perhaps this is why they are just a great way to create that beautiful, unique look you are interested in.

Want Something Even More Unique?

Let's say that you want something even more unique in the colored contacts you are purchasing. You want your eyes to truly stand out and look like no one else's. Perhaps you do not even want to look "strange" but just unique.

To do this, consider looking into a rather new type of colored contact lens. It is called the equinox lens. This lens is unique because the only thing that it adds to your eye is a black ring around the outside of your iris. This creates a visually stimulating look that is very beautiful and very much something natural. It allows a simple way to highlight the color of your eye and although you may believe it to be strange, you may find it is the best change for you, no matter what your eye color is.

Or, you could consider even more radical options. Regardless of the color of your eye, you can consider contact lenses with all sorts of colors, styles and overall unique looks. If you want to really stand out, consider contact lenses that feature things like animals on them. These may be pretty far out there, but they are still tempting to consider.

The contact lenses will fit precisely over your eye.  Once there, you do not have to move them at all and they will not slide around assuming that they are correctly sized. The right size allows for your contacts to lie well in your eye so that you never feel them there or see them slipping. The shape and curve of your eye must be measured as does the size of the eye.  Most often, this is done by an eye machine and takes just seconds to happen.

Choosing The Right One For You

For most people the right colored contact will help them to look great and add a bit of flare or uniqueness to their eyes.  The right look for you, then, is the one that changes your eye color just to the color you want it to be.

You can have your eye's match your outfit or even match your new hair color.  Or, you can just soften their look slightly so that people stop and say, "I don't know what it is, but you look different!"  Only you have to know that there's a very small amount of plastic in your eye changing your eyes into your new and fresh look.

A good place to start in comparing the options that you have is to talk to your eye doctor.  He or she will first need to give you an example to be sure that your eyes are healthy enough for contact lenses.

Not everyone's eyes can tolerate them.  If you have a prescription, a new prescription should be selected for you if necessary.  Then, the eye doctor needs to do one of the most important aspects of getting you fitted for colored contacts and that is to measure your eye.

Choose Your Favorite Color And Then Some

Once you have had your eyes measured, the eye doctor will work closely with you to determine what the right brand and color contact is right for you. There are many on the market, some better than others. Most often, your eye doctor will stock more than one brand for you to select from, depending on your contact lens color desires as well as your overall eye's needs.

Freshlook is one of the leading companies producing this type of contact lens. In dark colored eyes, opaque contact lenses are the best fit.

Freshlook offers a variety of colors here including Blues, Pure Hazel, Amethyst, Gray, Green, True Sapphire, and many more. In addition, for those with dark eyes that just want to change their eye color slightly, Freshlook also offers a range of products called radiance that allow that to happen still using the opaque colored contact. Colors here include Eden and Moonlight, for example.

Since you are likely to have many options to choose from, consider several.  Choose the one that you like the most.  You should be able to test several different products until you find the perfect fit for your eye color goal.  Most often, the colored contacts that you want will be available through your eye doctor readily.  They often supply you with the first pair and then you will need to purchase additional options down the road.

Once this is done, if you are a first time contact lens user, the eye doctor will allow you to work with a technician to teach you how to put the contacts into the eye as well as how the care for them.  While it is quite common for people to believe this to be a waste of time, one eye infection from not taking care of your eyes will show you that it is.  Realize that it will take you a few minutes to really practice getting your contacts into and out of your eye comfortable.  It is normal for this process to take at least 30 minutes.

Color, Color, Everywhere

For those looking for that beautiful new look for the season or even for that special occasion, enhance your look with colored contacts. If you are like many, you know the color you want. If you are not sure, give several a try. Chances are excellent that more than one colored contact product will fall into your bag. Why? Because not only are you able to change your colored contacts now, but you could change your mind when you slip into a new outfit or the seasons change.

Be sure that you take them seriously, though. Contact lenses are easily susceptible to bacteria and other elements in the air. That means that they can allow your eyes to become infected if you do not properly care for them. Like all contact lens products, you must consider proper care of the lenses as part o the packaged deal for this fashion accessory. The process of caring for them is fairly straightforward and simplistic even!

Contact lenses are the new fashion accessory.  If you have always wished to have those baby blue eyes, you can do so easily with the use of these lenses.  For those with dark colored eyes, there is hope for you.  Although it was harder to get colored contacts just a few years back for those that had dark colored eyes, today, opaque lenses make it much easier to happen.
