Cockalier Hybrid Dogs

As a cross between two spaniel dog types, the Cockalier is a moderate sized dog that is ideal as a companion pet. They can more closely favor either the Cocker Spaniel or the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel so both size as well as coat type can vary significantly. In general terms this canine hybrid will weigh between 15 and 30 pounds at maturity and will stand between 10 and 14 inches at the shoulder on average.

The coat may be wavy and longer like the Cocker Spaniel or finer, silkier and straight like the Cavalier. They can be a variety of colors from tans and browns through to parti and tri-colors all possible. White is very common on the dog and may also appear on the face and chest in the solid colored coats.

The head is typical spaniel with a squarish, solid muzzle, large, slightly prominent dark eyes and turned over ears that hang to the level of the lower jaw. The neck is moderately long and slightly arched and the chest and rib cage are wide and well developed. The legs are straight and solid with larger feet. The tail is well plumed and carried high, typically wagging happily at everyone the dog meets and sees.

The Cockalier is a wonderful companion pet that is excellent with children and other animals. They may be prone to chasing cats, squirrels and birds but can be trained to be excellent house dogs with cats and other animals. Early and frequent socialization is important to prevent chasing from becoming a habit.

The Cockalier is one of the companion hybrid breeds that is not prone to being dominant or assertive, rather they are more submissive and sensitive. Gentle, positive training is the best option for this breed and they should not be trained using negative or harsh methods. They tend to be very attuned to human emotion and therefore only require a gentle correction to learn. Highly intelligent they do well in obedience classes and are quick to learn new commands and tricks. The Cockalier tends to be a very playful dog, excellent at games of fetch or just romping around in the yard with the kids.

The coat, if left long, needs regular grooming at least every other day. Clipping the coat in a Cocker Spaniel clip will prevent some grooming requirements. This hybrid dog is an average shedder year round but routine bathing, grooming and clipping will minimize the hair left on furniture in the house.

The eyes of the Cockalier are prone to problems such as cataracts and infections so it is important to clean them at every grooming. Watch for signs of tearing that may indicate infections or irritations. The ears should also be carefully checked for signs of infection and should be thoroughly dried if the dog is bathed or has been swimming.

As with any dog the Cockalier need routine exercise time and space to run. They can live in apartments provided they have routine, longer walks and time to play. Excellent swimmers, they love the water and make great retrievers for a game of fetch.
