Bich-Poo Hybrid Dogs (Poochon, Bichpoo)

Physical Description

As a hybrid dog the Bich-poo or Poochon is a cross between a Toy or Miniature Poodle and a Bichon Frise. They are a little powder puff looking dog, typically weighing between 10 and 15 pounds and measuring 12-14 inches at the shoulder. There may be significant variations in size based on the type of Poodle used in the hybrid.

The coat of the Bichpoo is curly and soft and sheds very little, making them one of the few dog types that may be hypoallergenic for many people. They can come in a variety of colors from pure white through to white and apricot, white and black or brown, gray, solid black or various colors of browns and tans. Since the Bichon Frise parent is pure white, the colors will come from the Poodle side of the cross.

The Poochon is a solid dog with a sturdy body, moderately long legs and a balanced overall appearance. They tend to have a longer tail that is well fringed and carried high on the hind quarters. The neck is moderately long and the head is round in shape with a longer, tapered muzzle. The ears are medium to long in side and turn over close to the head to frame the face. The eyes are dark, round and alert and always watching what is going on.

Temperament

This canine hybrid is a very intelligent dog that loves to be with people. They learn tricks incredibly fast and are easy to housetrain, obedience train and socialize. Typically the hybrid breeds with Poodles or Bichon Frise are not dog aggressive and get along well with cats and other pets and the Poochon is no different.

The Bichpoo really needs to be around people and does not do well in houses where he or she will be left alone for long periods of time. They are most content following their owners around the house, playing with the kids or just cuddling up close to the family. They also love to be in the center of the action and are great companion dogs for traveling. With a naturally playful streak the Bich-poo will self-exercise indoors however they still need some outside exercise time.

 Grooming And General Care

As with any of the dog types with longer, curly coats the Bich-Poo will need regular grooming and clipping to help keep the coat manageable and free from tangles. Many owners choose the puppy clip or Poodle clip which will reduce grooming significantly. In addition the eyes and ears need to be routinely cleaned to prevent problems with infections.

This small breed may have a tendency to become a finicky eater if provided too many table scraps or only fed human foods. It is important for dental health to start these dogs on a good, high quality premium kibble as soon as possible. Routine exercise also helps to keep these dogs healthy and active well into their senior years.
